Strathmore RCMP promote equipment security during National Farm Safety Week (March 14–20)

Strathmore, Alta. – In recognition of National Farm Safety Week, March 14 to 20, the Strathmore RCMP are encouraging rural residents and agricultural operators to take proactive steps to secure machinery, tools, fuel, and outbuildings as preparations begin for the upcoming farming season.

As producers begin equipment maintenance, field preparation, and spring planning, farmyards may see increased activity. At the same time, valuable machinery and tools may be left accessible or unattended. Rural properties can be attractive targets for theft due to their remote locations and the high value of agricultural equipment. By taking preventative measures early in the season, rural property owners can significantly reduce the risk of property-related crime and help protect their livelihood.

The Strathmore RCMP offer the following crime prevention tips:

  • Lock up combines, tractors, and other equipment when not in use.
  • Always remove keys from tractors, combines, ATVs, and other machinery.
  • Activate GPS tracking technology if available on equipment.
  • Use wheel locks, hitch locks, or immobilizers on larger equipment.
  • Lock gates and fences, even in remote areas.
  • Store tools, fuel, and chemicals in secure, well-lit buildings.
  • Install motion-activated lighting or cameras on outbuildings.
  • Clearly mark equipment with serial numbers or farm ID to aid in recovery if stolen.
  • Consider tamper-proof markers or paint codes that are hard to remove.
  • Work with neighbours to watch for unusual activity in the area. Report suspicious activity as soon as able to police.
  • Consider using large hose clamps at three to six feet intervals to secure copper wire on farm pivots to discourage theft.

“Implementing these suggestions and reporting suspicious activity can go a long way to prevent and deter criminal activity in our rural areas. Reporting criminal activity is also important to help identify crime trends and areas to focus deployment of police resources.” – Staff Sergeant Mark Wielgosz – Detachment Commander Strathmore-Langdon RCMP

Community Update: Highway 561 Traffic Concerns

Wheatland County has heard from residents regarding increased truck traffic along Highway 561 and safety concerns near Wheatland Crossing School, the Village of Hussar, and surrounding roadways.  We recognize that Highway 561 is an important travel route for residents, school transportation, and industry, and understand concerns related to traffic volumes, speeds, and the narrower sections of roadway along this corridor.

County Peace Officers continue to actively monitor Highway 561 and surrounding routes, including the 80 km/h zone near Wheatland Crossing, the 60 km/h Hussar speed zone, and the Highway 561/56 corridor. Enforcement focuses on speeding, commercial vehicle compliance, and dangerous driving behaviours.

Community concerns have also been shared with Alberta Transportation and neighbouring municipalities. As Highway 561 is a provincial highway under Alberta Transportation’s jurisdiction, Wheatland County does not have the authority to restrict or reroute traffic operating legally on these roads.

If you witness unsafe driving, please report it to Wheatland County Protective Services at 403-361-2026, including the time, location, and vehicle details whenever possible. These reports help direct enforcement efforts.

It’s time to talk about Farm Succession

With Annessa Good-Hassard, Peak Heritage Consulting

  • Wheatland County Administration Building
  • November 19, 2025 – 10:00pm – 4:30pm

“They” say farm families need to communicate more and better. But how?

In this session, Annessa Good-Hassard of Peak Heritage Consulting Ltd. shares practical strategies and frameworks to move beyond vagueness into clear, actionable tools. Guided by her motto: “Succession is the transfer of a business, Estate Planning is the transfer of assets pre- and post-death, and Transition is a combination of both — proactive rather than reactive,” she offers a grounded, real-world approach to planning.

Topics include family dynamics, operational clarity, compensation, land transfer strategies, estate planning, and fiscal realities — with the goal of giving families confidence to start the conversations every farm faces.
