Waste and Recycling
About Waste & Recycling
The Wheatland County Waste Transfer Site facilities which are operated by County Staff are intended to provide a means for (Wheatland County rate payers/residents) to dispose of household solid waste. This program was initiated in the 1970’s as part of a province wide program to limit the number of unregulated landfills. The waste transfer sites are a collection point for solid waste which is then transferred to a landfill or recycling facility. The sites are regulated by Alberta Environment, Drumheller Solid Waste Management Association, and the recyclers handling the end product.
To avoid the inconvenience of a particular service not being available (bins too full), Wheatland County residents are encouraged to call their local site attendant before loading large/heavy items.
Please remember sites are for household residential (all garbage must be bagged) solid waste only. Construction demolition, industrial or commercial waste generators must make their own arrangements, any load may be rejected if it is contaminated with unacceptable items. Recycling rules are mandated by Alberta Environment and our operators are there to ensure the rules are followed.
Recycling takes effort and cooperation from all parties involved but the long term benefit it provides for our environment makes it a worthwhile endeavor for all of us.
Farm Chemical Container recycling sites are located at Strathmore, Hussar and Standard. Extensive Livestock and feedlot operations are expected to make their own arrangements for disposal of sharps (needles) and pharmaceutical waste.
Plastic Baler Twine Recycling
Wheatland County will be offering recycling bags free of charge to livestock producers for the collection of plastic baler twine in order to reduce the amount of prohibited debris being burned. These bags will fit into a 45 gallon barrel and when full can be dropped off at the Strathmore, Hussar and Standard Waste transfer sites.
To pick up bags or for more information contact Russ Muenchrath (Manager of Agricultural Services) at the County office: 403-934-3321
