Fire Prevention Week October 4-10, 2026
Fire Prevention Week runs October 4–10, 2026. This year’s campaign, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on helping residents safely use and charge the rechargeable, lithium-ion battery-powered devices we rely on every day.
From phones, tablets and laptops to e-bikes, power tools and toys, rechargeable devices are part of everyday life. While convenient, damaged batteries, incompatible chargers and unsafe charging practices can create a serious fire risk.
Wheatland County encourages residents to take a few simple precautions:
- Use the charger provided with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, not on beds, couches or under pillows.
- Keep charging areas clear of paper, clothing and other combustible materials.
- Unplug devices once they are fully charged when possible.
- Stop using a battery or device if it is damaged, swelling, leaking, overheating or has an unusual odour.
- Recycle batteries responsibly. Do not place rechargeable batteries in household garbage or recycling bins.
- Make sure smoke alarms are working throughout your home, and practise a home fire escape plan with everyone in your household.
This Fire Prevention Week, make safe charging part of your daily routine. A few small actions can help prevent fires and protect the people and places that matter most.
