2024 Insect Survey Results are in!

Insect Survey Results – 2024 Summary

  • Cabbage Seedpod Weevil: Present during early flower surveys, but no samples were above threshold levels. Continued monitoring of first flowering canola fields is essential.
  • Bertha Armyworm: Five sites were monitored, with none exceeding the first warning level of 300. This monitoring system is effective in predicting when farmers need to scout for bertha armyworm and indicates potential population build-ups for future outbreaks.
  • Wheat Midge: In seven fields sampled, only one midge was found, but potential issues in 2025, as midge can remain dormant in soil. Farmers should be prepared to scout their fields during May and June rains.
  • Pea Leaf Weevil: Numbers were higher than usual in some fields, and farmers’ responses will depend on their risk tolerance.
  • Wheat Stem Sawfly: Cutting percentages were down from 2023, possibly due to random survey sampling. Awareness of potential hotspots remains important.
  • Cutworm: There was one report on forages, highlighting the need for continued vigilance.
  • Hessian Fly: Reports by agronomists, despite potential confusion with wheat stem sawfly. Continued monitoring and proactive management are crucial.
